3 injured during a gunfight at a Border Patrol building in Texas

Federal and local law enforcement responded to the shooting, which occurred at a facility near the southern border

Updated at 10:00 a.m. ET July 8

A U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, was the site of a shoot-out Monday morning between an armed individual and federal and local law enforcement officers.

The shooter was killed and two officers and one Border Patrol employee were injured, according to an X post from the Homeland Security Department. DHS on Tuesday specified that a McAllen police officer was shot in the leg and a USBP officer and employee both sustained injuries. All three of them were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.

The FBI identified the alleged gunman as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda.

The law enforcement agency said in a statement to Government Executive that at approximately 5:53 a.m. McAllen police received calls about shots heard outside of a USBP station. An armed adult male suspect “engaged” with law enforcement officers who responded to the scene.

The National Border Patrol Council posted on social media that: “We are thankful for the prayers for our agents and personnel. Targeted violence will not be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly. Justice will be served. Our agents and law enforcement partners will not back down.”

In January, Border Patrol agent David Maland was shot and killed while performing a traffic stop in Vermont near the Canadian border. The trial for the woman who has been charged in connection with his death is ongoing.
